Saffron Walden U17 21 Ely U17 0 An immense forward effort in which only the lineout faltered, there were some magnificent individual performances in a rip-roarer of a game. Ely were as expected, big and powerful up front, pick and drive seemed their main game plan. The Walden pack were more than a match, Emiel Pronk, Charlie Potter, Anil Noonan, Scott Loader and the ever present Nik Baker didn't budge an inch. Ely with all the possession in the 1st half didn't once look like scoring. Eventually Baker muscled his way over the line unopposed. Richard Gough converts for a 7-0 half. The second half starts in similar fashion Ely desperate to level the scores spin the ball wide but Dave Butcher and Dan Clark were resolute in defence, Butcher closing down his man so well Ely just couldn't make yards. Mark Kimberley and Sam Barrett combine well on the wings and were unlucky not to add to the score. The distribution from Oli Haskins was assured at scrum half and the kicking out of hand from Gough was again outstanding. A fluid passage of play in the Ely 22 with help from the fresh legs of Garth Boucher, Sam Phipps & Byron Jenkins combined with a cheeky offload form Baker to Luke Wilkinson to dab the ball down for Walden's 2nd try. Another from Baker seals a comprehensive win over a very tidy Ely team. Emeil Pronk deservedly voted this weeks Saffron Walden U17's man of the match.
